A calmer first checklist when a newborn cries.
New parents do not need a perfect answer every time. They need a safe order of things to check.
Check the basics first
- Feeding window: is the baby likely hungry?
- Diaper and clothing: is something wet, tight, hot, or cold?
- Sleep pressure: is the baby overtired or overstimulated?
- Gas: did the crying begin after feeding?
- Environment: bright lights, loud sound, or too much handling?
When to get help
Contact a medical professional for fever, breathing concerns, poor feeding, unusual limpness, blue color, persistent vomiting, injury, or crying that feels very unusual for your baby.
